A quartet of repeated local walks: loops from my home, around the block and back again. Recorded at sunrise, midday, sunset and midnight in mid-November 2020, at a time when local Covid lockdown restrictions were easing. With one lapel microphone clipped to the inside of my face mask, another attached to the outside of my clothing, I listen to my neighbourhood rhythms, and the fluctuations of my breath, my footfall. This repeated movement is an exercise in familiarity, comfort, and facing apprehension.

Four recordings are presented here mostly unprocessed, save for some muffling of human voice recorded inadvertently.

This digital sketch was made for ADSR Zine in response to words and sounds by Becky Sui Zhen, Fayen Ke-Xiao d’Evie, Janet Cardiff, Roslyn Oades, and other generous conversations held at Chamber Made’s 2020 Hi-Viz Practice Exchange. Read more in ADSR Zine 012, December 2020.

While I mention my ‘home’, I acknowledge that I’m an uninvited guest on stolen land. This Time Around was made in so-called Footscray, on land that belongs to Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nation. I pay my respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.

This Time Around is a non-linear interactive listening experience, and you're invited to listen, loop and layer the audio recordings at your leisure. This may not be suitable if you're exclusively using a keyboard to navigate this page (eg. if you use a screen reader). For some, a linear listening experience may be more comfortable.

Audio and video descriptions are forthcoming. Please note, each audio file is presented here in stereo and dynamically shifts between quiet and loud sounds. If you want to see these options again at any point, refresh the page.
